Traditional Doors Interiortraditional doors

Our large selection of stylish doors represents this broad term used for timber doors which are generally constructed with 4, 6 or 8 panels. Though other, more ornate styles, for example, in the French, St Louis style with 2 large panels are usually categorized as this style. Alternatively, a 30's style door with a top panel and 3 vertical bottom panels is often referred as traditional as is a 20's styled 4 equal panels. We supply ranges which include glazing and Fire doors specifications.

Many of the doors available today were invented during the Georgian Period. The internal doors of the early Georgian era were often varnished to retain the natural appearance of the timber and were still being influenced by the earlier much darker, Baroque style. However, the fashion for lighter colours became popular, moving away from heavy colours such as Burgundy, Green on walls and Natural dark timbers. Consequently doors were then painted, along with the walls, in pastel colours. Today these particular designs are suited, as then, to varnishing or painting.

Additional information.

Typically in the Mid Georgian period the configuration of 2 smaller raised panels at the top, sometimes, glazed, with 4 larger raised panels below was the norm. It was important to the Georgians, to produce symmetry and balance with classical proportions, creating a restrained, elegance was a significant feature of these early interiors. Imposing residences occasionally had 9 panels, comprising of 3 small top panels, 6 larger below, this style was often used as grand entrance doors both internally and externally. Doors with 8 panels were popular particularly as double interior doors and in their glazed form have become a characteristic of the Georgian interior style.

During the late Georgian era 4 panelled doors became fashionable and this later became synonymous with the Victorian Era. Usually 4 panel doors were painted and they were made from pine or pitch pine. During the 1970's the trend for stripping back pine became fashionable and this started a new era of using pine in the home. This choice is still popular though finishes have changed to allow a more natural appearance and paint is becoming more fashionable again as it was in 1930.

Timbers for these style of doors are typically knotty, clear or Pitch Pine, though white Oak has become popular and occasionally walnut doors are available in these styles. The modern construction of panel doors is veneer onto solid core, allowing for a very stable product, though some pitch pine doors are constructed in solid timber creating a quality, traditional in appearance.
